Notice any unusual activity on your Instagram account? Think your account’s security has been compromised? Here’s how to know if our Instagram account has been hacked and what to do if it has.
More and more people are joining Instagram. It’s fun, it’s playful and above all it’s very easy to use.
The catch is that since it’s now owned by Facebook, the two networks are interrelated. So if our Instagram account is compromised, there’s a good chance Facebook is too or is next.
Fortunately, there is a way to see all the connections that have been made on our Instagram account and disconnect the ones we don’t recognize.
What to do if you think your Instagram account has been hacked
Notice any unusual activity on your Instagram account? A photo you didn’t post. A comment or like you didn’t make. Or a private message (inbox) that wasn’t sent by you?
If this is the case, it would be a good idea to go and look at your account activity and connections that have taken place.
Thus, to find out if our Instagram account has been hacked or is compromised, we need to:
- Open the Instagram application
- Press on your profile picture
- Press on the hamburger tab (three horizontal lines)
- Select: Settings
- Press on the tab: Security
- Choose the option: Connection activity
- Look at the connections
- Press the button: It wasn’t me or the three little dots
- Choose the option: Disconnect
If we see a connection that was not made from one of our devices, we can temporarily disconnect the person. The temporary word is important, since if our password is compromised, the person will be able to log in again.
What to do if one is unable to log into their Instagram account?
If your account has been hacked and you are unable to log in, you should have received an email from Instagram stating that a change has been made to the account.
We can then report that it wasn’t us who made the change and undo the change.
It is also possible to report to Instagram that our account has been hacked.
To report a hacked account to Instagram, you need to:
- Go to the login page
- Select the option: Get help to connect
- Enter your username, email or phone number linked to the account
- Press: Next
- Press the option: Do you need more help?
- Choose option: My account has been hacked
How to protect our Instagram account from being hacked
After disconnecting the intruder device, it is super important to go and change the password of our account and take a strong one that will be difficult to break into. You can find the option to change your password in the Security tab once again.
It may also be a good idea to activate two-factor authentication to further strengthen our account and block intruders.
By activating it, we will either receive a code by text message to validate the connection or we can use a two-factor application such as Google Authentificator. Granted, it takes a little longer to log in, but it’s still a great way to protect your account.
Finally, the last thing we can consider doing is to check if our devices are not compromised by malware or a malicious extension on our computer browser.
Doing a small scan of our devices with an antivirus software will only take a few minutes and we may be able to identify the source of the problem and remove it.
